Stock markets around the world have collapsed. Many companies and individuals have gone bankrupt. There is a high suicide rate among fallen investors.
Sounds familiar? You're right - it's Berlin and it's December 31, 1929, just two months after the Wall Street Crash that destroyed so many lives, dreams and hopes. But at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin, there is no sign of despair or depression - life goes on and, as we know, Life is a cabaret!
Off the stage, however, life is not so free and easy. The show is set against the political background of the Weimar Republic in Germany. There are disturbing signs that German nationalism is on the rise and soon Hitler and the Nazi Party will come to power and they will need a scapegoat for the country's economic troubles - and who better suited for that role than the Jews?
Apart from the politics and the night-life, we also follow the fates of Sally Bowles, an English night-club singer, Clifford Bradshaw, an American would-be novelist, Herr Schulz, a Jewish shopkeeper, and Fraulein Schneider, the owner of the boarding-house where they all live. How will they cope in the changing world in which they are living? As Rick said in Casablanca, It doesn't take much to see that the problems of [...] little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.
This is Maybe Theatre Company's first full-length musical since Rent and it brings together the combined talents of some familiar old faces with the new enthusiasm of some MTC first-timers. The show is suitable for children of gimnazjum age and upwards and also of course for adults. Come and hear the songs you know so well from the 1972 film version (starring Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey and Michael York) and watch our young and talented cast dance and act out this amazing story in front of your very eyes.
As the Master of Ceremonies says, Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!
